Overview

It’s no secret that New York hotel rooms can be a little on the small side, but what I like about CIVILIAN is that they’ve pulled in luxe velvets, rich colours and some of the most beautiful bathrooms I’ve ever seen to really take their 12m² to the next level.

Plus, unlike other New York hotels that charge a ‘resort fee’ to cover things like fast WiFi, a drink on arrival and room service, I like that CIVILIAN has a standard basic rate that everyone pays, and then you can choose to pay more if you want the extras. For me, it’s a clever way to make a really nice hotel more affordable.

When I visited, the restaurant and rooftop bar were still in the works but opening up in Summer 2022, I can see the latter being incredibly popular – thanks to the fact that the hotel sits right on the edge of Hell’s Kitchen which is protected by law from having any buildings over 66 feet or seven stories.

There’s also lots of hints of its West End location with props from productions in the first floor bar, and plaques in the restaurant marking all the different New York theatres.
