Traitors Hotel Stays For Under £50
Can you stay in a castle for under fifty quid? Why yes you can!
YHA St Briavels Castle, Gloucestershire
What’s special? This castle is over £800 years old, and is a Grade I listed ancient monument. Step inside and you’ll feel transported back to medieval times. Just look at her – isn’t she a beauty?!
Where you’ll stay: You can book a bunk, a room, or even the whole place! Needless to say, for stays less than £50, you’ll need to take the bunk option.
What to do: Now this is a stunning part of the country, and is officially an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so pack your hiking boots and enjoy the numerous walks in the area.
How much? Bunks start at £30 per night, private rooms from £140 per night. This spot is already pretty booked up for 2025 but we found some available nights from August onwards.
North Mains Cottage - Craigievar Castle, Scotland
What’s special? Stay in the grounds of picture-perfect Craigievar Castle, which will have you clogging up your camera roll. Now you aren’t inside the castle itself here, you’re in one of three cosy stone cottages on the estate. But it’s still a fab way to stay on-site and soak up that candy-pink castle magic.
Where you’ll stay: The cottage sleeps four, in two twin rooms.
What to do: There’s no wifi in the cottage, so you’ll have to venture out! Take a guided tour of Craigievar Castle to discover tales of days gone by, and head to the nearest town of Alford, where you can enjoy a drink in the pub and pick up groceries from the local shop.
How much? Prices start at £200 per night for four people (minimum stay 2 nights), making it just £50 per person per night.

Even if you like a good deal, you can still afford a castle!
Tregenna Castle Resort, Cornwall
What’s special? Retreat to this gorgeous rambling 15th-century Cornish castle with huge grounds and dreamy coastal views.
Where you’ll stay: Choose from double or twin with or without a sea view, or splash out on a superior room, family room, suite or apartment.
What to do: At the hotel, take a dip in the indoor or outdoor pools, or play some tennis or golf. St Ives is a short walk away – visit Tate St Ives or enjoy a cream tea – as is the beach, although be warned it’s uphill on the way back!
How much? Prices start at around £76 per night for a standard room.
Pousada Castelo de Estremoz, Portugal
What’s special? Historic castle built for a 13th-century queen, with antique furnishings and modern comforts.
Where you’ll stay: Rooms range from standard to superior, and there are family rooms too. Snuggle up in a wooden carved bed – some even have canopies.
What to do: There’s an outdoor pool for sunny days. You’re in the city of Estremoz in the Alentejo region, known for its stunning landscapes, hilltop towns, historic castles and excellent wine.
How much? Stay from £93 a night.

Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg, Germany
What’s special? A bougie baroque former hunting palace with a spa and a two-Michelin starred restaurant.
Where you’ll stay: Opt for their standard ‘Grand Lit’ room or upgrade yourself to Superior or Deluxe. There are also numerous suites of various sizes.
What to do: Chill out in the spa or treat yourself to a fancy meal. Cologne is about a half hour drive away (you can even see it from the Schloss) or if you’re happy to go further (around 1h 30min) you can go walking in the stunning Westerwald or Eifel mountains.
How much? Rooms start at around £178 per night.
Augill Castle, Cumbria
What’s special? Picture-perfect historic castle with antique furniture, statement wallpaper and four-poster beds galore.
Where you’ll stay: Bag a superior room with a posh four poster and original fireplace, opt for a fancier King or go big and nab a Suite. There’s even a four-bedroom house you can stay in!
What to do: Half an hour’s drive away is the market town of Kirky Stephen. This is castle country, so if staying in one isn’t enough, head out see the ruins of Brough Castle or Pendragon Castle. Or strike out into the Cumbrian countryside – you’re on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park here.

What’s special? This fairytale castle has killer views over Lucerne and Lake Lucerne, stretching as far as Mount Rigi.
Where you’ll stay: Take your pick from duplex or double rooms, and a number of suites.
What to do: Jump on the funicular and head to Lucerne’s old town for a stroll and to admire the colourful buildings. Take a boat trip across Lake Lucerne, or visit the resort town of Interlaken, about an hour’s drive away.

What’s special? This former hunting lodge perched in the mountains is an utterly luxurious spot to lay your head.
Where you’ll stay: Plump for a deluxe double or choose one of the suites.
What to do: First off, have your fill of the jawdropping panoramic views across the valley. Next up is probably a swim in the heated outdoor pool, then a sauna in the spa. Then visit the beautiful Merano botanical gardens, or the epic thermal baths complex at Terme Merano.
